Hi everybody,

I was reading today about a new study in the December 2009 issue of the reputable journal Anesthesiology about a study linking opioids to decreased brain levels of adenosine, which in turn causes poor sleep. The gist of the article is that opioids can cause poor sleep, which in turn leads to heightened perception of pain, and thus increasing opioid requirements. It’s a self-perpetuating cycle. Not a new concept by any measure, but it re-affirms what we already know…. That for all of us out there, but especially important for those with chronic pain, good sleep hygeine is essential to healthy, happy living.

We all have different reasons for doing what we do. For me, I am reminded of why I do this job. Although I am an anesthesiologist, working in the operating room does not afford me the possibility of seeing patients in clinic. I like seeing patients…. talking, chatting about their problems, the weather, local events, and even politics. You see the same friendly faces again and again, and watch them progress through the treatment.

Another week has passed. I’ve been working on introducing us to the community. I have been trying to arrange for our presence at health fairs and activity centers. We have a spotlight article coming soon in the Cross Timbers Gazette. Hope everybody out there takes a look at it. It’s pretty well written.

‘Twas the last week of January, one really cold month. The week started off warm, but by the end of Friday, snow was falling… AGAIN. Not enough for a snowman this time, unlike our Christmas.

Much excitement as usual. New arrivals everyday. New patient faces, new supplies. Our procedure suite is now fully operational. Patients will find it much easier to have both clinic visits and procedures performed on-site. I’ve started the beginnings of a profile of the clinic on facebook.

Everyone is so friendly and happy. It must be the local charm. I’m really glad we settled here in Flower Mound. Thanks everybody!
